Super Pets Grand Opening

June 24 and 25 You may have noticed the new Super Pets that recently opened at 9403 Las Tunas.  What you probably don’t know is the long history behind the new store.  Super Pets got its’ humble beginnings in Pasadena in 1967 when Vince Markese, just eighteen years old, opened a 100 sq.ft. aquarium shop.  Working by his side was his high school sweetheart and soon to be bride, Pamela.  Over the years the business grew and branched out changing locations, until their retirement in 1995.

The eldest of their three children Mark Markese, having grown-up working in his parents stores always imagined himself having a store of his own someday.  This brings us to the new pet store in Temple City.  Now Mark with wife Briana and two children of their own, have fulfilled Mark’s dream of having his own store.

Super Pets is located at the site of the previous Country House Furniture store. The site has been completely renovated.  When you walk into the 11,000 square foot store, you instantly notice the massive size and at the same time you notice that it is completely filled with everything you can imagine for your pet and more.  Just to mention a portion of Super Pets inventory, they have a huge selection of dog and cat foods and supplies, a dog groomer, they sell birds, small animals, reptiles, fresh water fish, salt-water fish, and have a large reef fish section.  In the near future they plan on having a vaccination clinic.

With the size and selection customers have to come to expect, and the personal touches of a family business, shopping at Super Pets is a pleasure.  When asked what a customer can expect when shopping at their store, Mark and Briana said, “We want to do it all, great prices, unbeatable services and a wide variety of products to choose from.”

Super Pets is open seven days a week.  Their hours are Monday through Saturday from 9-9 and Sundays from 10-7.  They can also be reached at (626) 237-0715.

Scrapbook Buddies
9661 Las Tunas Dr.

Scrapbooking has arrived in Temple City! Scrapbook Buddies is a joint venture between two sisters and a sister-in-law, Yvonne Nakamoto, Laura Centeno and Melissa Centeno, respectively. All of whom are excited in giving people the opportunity to be creative while discovering the joys of elaborately preserving personal photographs in photo albums.

In 1996, Yvonne began scrapbooking to preserve the memories of her first child, Yvette. She is more than a photo album enthusiast, she has turned her scrapbooks into a work of art by creating her own designs for page layouts. A few years and two children later, Yvonne finds herself working on three albums.

Melissa can thank Yvonne for introducing her to scrapbooking. She was encouraged to preserve her memories of her travels of Europe, Asia and the Olympics and since her wedding day, one year ago, Melissa has taken on the creative challenge.

Laura's first hand at scrapbooking came when she put together a photo album commemorating her father's 60th birthday party. She had always wanted to own a business, but just didn't know what kind. After the birth of her son, Ryan, the idea of a store in the San Gabriel Valley began to germinate. The trio scouted many areas, but decided Temple City provided a perfect location in creating a unique atmosphere for all scrapbookers.

The store includes a spacious "workshop area" where scrappers can come in and work on their scrapbooks while having access to many cropping supplies, paper punches, decorative edged scissors and die cuts. Workshops and classes will begin in January and they will include paper piecing layouts, borders and techniques such as chalking and journaling. Their inventory includes acid-free paper, templates, tools, albums, carrying cases, die cuts, stickers, adhesives, and decorative letters.

The store will also feature floral arrangements and gifts from Rosie's Creations. These designs are specially created by Rosa Centeno....yes, their mom.

Scrapbook Buddies has set major goals: to provide a variety in inventory, to make workshops a gathering place of new ideas and to contribute to Temple City's strong community.

Scrapbook Buddies is located at 9661 Las Tunas, Temple City. The phone number is (626) 286-2846. They're open 7 days a week: Monday-Thursday 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.; Fridays 10 a.m. - 9 p.m.; Saturdays 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.; Sundays 12 - 4 p.m. Stop by and visit this great store. You'll find that scrapbooking is easy, fun and great way to preserve memories!

Temple City (626) 614-8303

The Temple City Chamber of Commerce is happy to introduce one of their newly recruited members, Derek Tong, O.D., located at 5546 N. Rosemead Blvd., Suite 207, Temple City. (Across the street from Burger King).

Dr. Derek Tong is a graduate of the Southern California College of Optometry, where he was also residency-trained in the area of Pediatric Optometry and Vision Therapy. After serving as a Clinical Instructor at the College of Optometry and then working in a prestigious eye clinic in Beverly Hills for the past few years, he and his wife had decided to move to the San Gabriel Valley to live closer to their family and friends. His new clinic provides full-service eye care to the whole family, including general vision examinations, learning-related vision examinations, visual-perceptual evaluations, vision therapy, eyeglasses dispensing, and contact lenses.

He is particularly interested in helping children with reading and learning problems. Research has shown that as many as 15 to 20% of school-aged children have vision problems that interfere with their academic achievement. These conditions often mimic or complicate A.D.D. and can cause immense frustration on both the parents and the child if not treated properly. Dr. Tong and his staff are committed to educating parents and educational professionals on these detrimental conditions by offering free monthly workshops at his clinic as a community service. Please contact his clinic at (626) 614-8303 for the date and time of the next workshop.
