Dr. Cathryn Hu Joins Chamber

HuThe benefits of acupuncture treatment for infertile couples have started to be documented in recent years. The Birmingham (Eng.) Post, for example, told the story of Ian and Vicky Walsh, a young British couple who wanted to have a child. Vicky got traditional western treatment while her husband used acupuncture and changes in diet to raise his sperm count from 0.4 million to 65 million. The western treatment failed, but the acupuncture – and, the couple believe, praying at a famous shrine in Cuba – led to the natural birth of their first son George Ian Walsh.

Sometimes subtle changes result in large changes. One of the simplest and most obvious is reducing stress, which is almost pandemic in today’s fast-paced society. Ironically, trying to conceive a child and being unable to can lead to further increased levels of stress, which can help defeat the goal. Audrey Douglas of Albany, New York believes acupuncture in part for her being able to bear children after three miscarriages in a recent story in the Albany Times Union.

"All I know is that my body felt so much healthier," said Douglas, who gave birth in April to twin boys, Owen and Ryan, told the Times Union. "All of my systems seemed to be working better. Acupuncture at the very least helps you to relax, and that was something I needed."

Dr. Cathryn Hu believes in an integrative approach, which merge the best of eastern with western medical techniques. She will give the first lecture in a ten-lecture series on how acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine aid in fertility at her Arcadia office at 622 W. Duarte Rd., Suite 204 on Sept. 15 at 6:00. The first lecture is free. Call 626-462-9821 for more in sequence.

Cheers Alano Club Joins Chamber

26 years ago a group of recovering alcoholics got together and formed an Alano (no alcohol) club where persons who desired to maintain a clean and sober way of living could have meetings and hang out.

Our group was originally located on Rosemead Blvd., but very soon we moved to our current location at 5934 Temple City Blvd.  We have been there ever since, thanks in large part to our landlords, Herbert and Joanne Mahaffey, who have been one of our strongest supporters, and to whom we are eternally grateful.  In 2002, we incorporated as the Cheers Alano Club, a nonprofit public benefit corporation. In 2003 the IRS granted us 501(c) (3) (Charity) status.

In the beginning we had only a small room that was a portion of an upholstery shop.  About 15 years ago we were able to expand into the back portion of the building and create a meeting room.

Each week we have from 24 to 26 twelve step meetings for alcoholics and addicts.  These meetings of A.A. (Alcoholics Anonymous), N.A. (Narcotics Anonymous), and C.A. (Cocaine Anonymous) are open to everyone who wishes to attend.  We also get many referrals from the courts (court cards).  We have “old-timers” with as much as 44 years of clean and sober to those who may have only a few hours.  We have a very strong support system for anyone whose desire is to quit drinking and/or using.

The Alano Club is open every day from 11:00 a.m. until after the last meeting.  Cheers is a membership club and provides a place to hang out, play pool, play pinball, play video games, or just socialize without the presence of alcohol and drugs.  Anyone can become a member.

Everyone who runs, manages, and/or works at the club are volunteers.  We have no paid employees.  Cheers is registered with the courts in the area and some of our volunteers are fulfilling community service hours. We support ourselves through the membership dues, donations, and special events.  Over the year we sponsor a variety of events for our members to have fun and to raise money.

Cheers also host potluck dinners on Easter Sunday, Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day.  These potluck dinners are open to the general public and anyone who wouldn’t otherwise have a place to go. At Christmas we collect donations from our members and businesses in the community for a family we “adopt”.  One year we adopted a family of seven whose father and youngest girl (Sarah) were disabled.  We will never forget the smiles on those faces when a big, red fire engine pulled up in front of their house with sirens blaring.  All Sarah could say was, “All I wished for is a doll!”  Her wish was granted.

First 2 Fund Joins Chamber

Andrea OlivasAndrea Olivas, Temple City resident and graduate of Temple City High School, is one of the newest members to the Chamber.   She had been in the real estate industry for over 2 years and now works as both a Mortgage Specialist with First 2 Fund Home Loan Servicing and as a Realtor with Golden State Properties and Investments.  Andrea is someone you can trust because she is dedicated to educating the community about the ever changing real estate industry.  Buying, selling or refinancing your home are some of the most overwhelming processes for most people when it comes to real estate, but Andrea makes each process simple and painless.  She believes that the most important part of a smooth transaction begins with educating her clients on the basic steps they will be following to get to their ultimate goal.  By education her clients, Andrea makes them active partners with her in their transaction, giving them piece of mind instead not knowing where they stand during the whole process.

First 2 Fund Home Loan Servicing, located in Arcadia, prides themselves in finding the best possible loan programs to meet their clients’ goals.  In today’s mortgage industry, there are many companies that are just looking out for themselves instead of what is best for their clients who are trusting them to finance their biggest investment, their home.  First 2 Fund’s clients are informed of all the different options available to them, instead of being forced into the program that will make the loan officer the most money.  There is no run around or hidden fees to surprise their clients when they get to the end of the process either.  Their honest and hard working approach is making them the leader in the San Gabriel Valley and is why they are “The Fastest Way to Fund.”

Andrea Olivas has resided in Temple City for over 20 years. As a single mom with daughter Kayla, 5, she knows the importance of being an active part of the community.  To contact Andrea, call (626) 390-8306 or email her at aolivas@first2fund.com.

Super Pets Grand Opening

Super Pets

June 24 and 25 You may have noticed the new Super Pets that recently opened at 9403 Las Tunas.  What you probably don’t know is the long history behind the new store.  Super Pets got its’ humble beginnings in Pasadena in 1967 when Vince Markese, just eighteen years old, opened a 100 sq.ft. aquarium shop.  Working by his side was his high school sweetheart and soon to be bride, Pamela.  Over the years the business grew and branched out changing locations, until their retirement in 1995.

The eldest of their three children Mark Markese, having grown-up working in his parents stores always imagined himself having a store of his own someday.  This brings us to the new pet store in Temple City.  Now Mark with wife Briana and two children of their own, have fulfilled Mark’s dream of having his own store.

Super Pets is located at the site of the previous Country House Furniture store. The site has been completely renovated.  When you walk into the 11,000 square foot store, you instantly notice the massive size and at the same time you notice that it is completely filled with everything you can imagine for your pet and more.  Just to mention a portion of Super Pets inventory, they have a huge selection of dog and cat foods and supplies, a dog groomer, they sell birds, small animals, reptiles, fresh water fish, salt-water fish, and have a large reef fish section.  In the near future they plan on having a vaccination clinic.

With the size and selection customers have to come to expect, and the personal touches of a family business, shopping at Super Pets is a pleasure.  When asked what a customer can expect when shopping at their store, Mark and Briana said, “We want to do it all, great prices, unbeatable services and a wide variety of products to choose from.”

Super Pets is open seven days a week.  Their hours are Monday through Saturday from 9-9 and Sundays from 10-7.  They can also be reached at (626) 237-0715.

Dr. John Gutierrez Joins Chamber

Dr GutierrezWhat is Chiropractic Care?  There’s nothing mysterious about chiropractic.  It is a natural method of health care that focuses on treating the causes of physical problems, rather than just the symptoms.  Chiropractic is based on a simple but powerful premise:  With a normally functioning spine and a healthy lifestyle, your body is better able to heal itself.  That is because the spinal cord, which is protected by the spine, is the main pathway of your nervous system.  It controls feeling, movement and function throughout your body.  A Chiropractor works to restore your health and guides you in a personalized approach to overall wellness, through spinal care, exercise, good nutrition and stress management.

Maybe you are experiencing lower back pain, a headache or neck pain.  Have you thought about seeing a Chiropractor?  If the answer is yes, perhaps Dr. John Gutierrez can help you.

Dr. Gutierrez began his career in 1982.  He practiced in San Marino before moving to Temple City in 1986.  At that time he and his wife Sarah bought a home in the Temple City school district and raised their three daughters, and have been here in Temple City every since.

Both John and Sarah are involved with the Temple City Youth Development through the Temple City Schools.  When Dr. Gutierrez isn’t busy with a patient he can be found every Sunday at the 5:30 p.m. Mass at St. Luke Catholic Church where he is in the Life Teen Band playing the bass!

Office hours are Monday through Fridays, from 8:30 to 6:00 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.  You will be pleasantly surprised to see that their part-time receptionists are two Temple City High School graduates, Lisa and Stacy Chambers, and Jill Yanes a longtime Temple City resident and his wife Sarah is the office manager.

Dr. Gutierrez suggests that to avoid back pain, use safe lifting methods; develop balanced, stable trunk muscles as well as strong leg muscles; maintain a sensible weight for your height; get some sort of exercising; vary your position and encourage movement throughout the day; get good nutrition; use common sense when putting physical demands on your body; make sure you get proper sleep. To schedule an appointment call  626-309-0640.

Tandem, Inc. Joins Chamber

Tandem, Inc. is owned by Dawn Manwaring, a professional in private real estate financing. She counsels individuals and companies in structuring private paper transactions and helps them turn private paper assets into cash.

Many people are not aware they could get a lump sum of money for their trust deeds, business notes, or other cash flows. Dawn is an expert investor and can often help individuals creatively structure the sale of their note in a way that meets their financial needs.

Privately held trust deeds are created when the seller of residential or commercial real estate decides, in essence, to provide financing for the sale of their own property by carrying back the note, (promissory note or IOU). This is frequently called seller carry back financing. Sometimes this is done purposefully and serves as an investment vehicle for the seller. Sometimes it is done as a matter of necessity to facilitate the sale of a property that is difficult to sell, or when a prospective buyer cannot qualify for traditional financing. It is quite common for notes to be created to expedite the sale of a business or mobile home, as traditional financing for these types of transactions is limited.

At some point, the holder of a note may want to cash out in order to meet an emergency, buy a new car, pay for educational expenses, or invest in a new business venture. Or maybe they are tired of hassling with small monthly payments, wondering if the buyer will continue to pay, and would just rather be done with it and walk away with cash. Many times notes need to be liquidated in resolving estate distributions or divorce settlements.

Dawn Manwaring was born in Alhambra in 1964, and has been a resident of Temple City since 1995. She has four children currently attending schools here in the TCUSD, and will be serving on the Longden School Site Council for the next two years. Though her educational background is in healthcare, having graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1986, she has always had an interest in real estate, and has actively pursued various forms of real estate investing for several years.

Tandem, Inc. acquired the commercial property at 9661 Las Tunas Drive in 2002, and was privileged to work closely with the city through its facade improvement program to accomplish the desired renovations.

You are invited to visit Tandem, Inc. at www.ridingtandem.com to review several free reports that show how you can make or save money by knowing a little about the private cash flow industry. Attorneys, accountants, mortgage brokers, real estate agents and other professionals can learn how they are often in a position to help their clients by knowing about the services offered by Ms. Manwaring. There is even a place to list a note that you have for sale, right on the website. It doesn't get any easier than that!

If you would like even more information, you can request a complimentary copy of Dawn's information-packed quarterly newsletter, Update On Real Estate, by emailing her at dawn@ridingtandem.com. She can also be reached at (626) 641-3931.

American Heritage Realtors Joins Chamber

Welcome new Chamber member American Heritage Realtors.  This husband-wife team is located at 180 W. Live Oak, Arcadia.  George and Cecelia Rudar, being long time residents of Temple City since 1972, tried to keep their location as close to home as possible. George and Cecelia have been very active in volunteering their time to their four sons’ sports and school activities throughout the years.

American Heritage Realtors deal with a lot of repeat, past clients, referrals and their children!  George and Cecelia will go where the customer needs them.  In many cases they have been there, done that, which makes the transaction go smoothly!  Today’s real estate transactions are very complicated with a lot at stake.

They want their clients to have experienced realtors who are their representatives and their advocates from start to finish, making sure every “t” is crossed and every “i” is dotted.  Cecilia is a Senior Real Estate Specialist (SRES).  They have assisted many senior clients and enjoy working with seniors.

Both George and Cecelia have spent many years working for big corporate real estate companies and franchises.  By opening their own company they were able to achieve their American Dream by being their own bossesThey also felt they could pay more attention to the clients needs and not have to worry about meeting someone’s quota.  Their motto is: “Please allow us, to help you achieve your American Dream, whatever that means to you!”
